ISLAMABAD: World Environment Day with theme “Forests: Nature at your Service” this year in Pakistan was commemorated on Sunday. Addressing a seminar in connection with the Environment Day in Islamabad, UN Resident Coordinator in Pakistan, Timo Pakkala emphasized the need for close coordinated efforts to protect the forests ecosystems.
He said the UN agencies are already partnering with Pakistani government and under a programme an amount of $3.5 million has allocated for the protection of forests. In his address, Deputy Secretary Ministry of Environment Abid Mehmood said that under the Millennium Development Goals, Pakistan is committed to increase the forest cover from five percent to six percent.
He said we have already taken a number of steps in this regard that include annual monsoon and spring plantation campaigns.
