Mehmand Agency: Corps Commander Peshawar Lt Gen Asif Yasin Malik Wednesday said that the army would not start military operation in North Waziristan on demand of any country but would take decision itself to do so, when needed. Briefing to media here, he said the army action would be undertaken for bringing peace and to purge the tribal region of terrorists but reiterated that operation would not be carried out on dictation of any power in the world.
Lt. Gen. Asif said the government and the army leadership would decide about the operation and it would be against those who do not accept the writ of the government and carry out attacks on security forces. Lt. Gen. Asif declined extra military presence in the North Waziristan as international media prorating as army was preparing for the operation in the agency.
Director General ISPR Major General Athar Abbas and other top military officials were also present on the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, Lt. Gen Asif Yasin said that US drone strikes were not helpful in the war against terrorism and these attacks affected the efforts of Pak army to eliminate terrorists.
He said that information sharing with CIA was not abandoned but limited after Operation Abbottabad. Corps Commander said terrorists have support across the border of Afghanistan and by installment of biometric system and effective surveillance on Pak-Afghan boarder, entry of militants could be prevented.
Asif Yasin declined any possibility of joint operation with U.S. or NATO in tribe belt he said that Pak army was well capable to undertake any operation as it has done in Swat and South Waziristan. Corps Commander appealed to tribesmen to play their role in maintaining peace in their area. He asked them to keep an eye on the anti-state elements.
Commander of 77 Brigade, Brigadier Aftab Ahmed told the media that army has full control of 7 Tehsils of Mehmand Agency while had partial control on Tehsil Safi that borders with Afghanistan. He informed that militants from Swat, Dir, Bajor and Kantar province of Afghanistan were penetrating in Mehmand Agency adding that 700 militants have been flashed from the agency.
He informed that about 200 militants were arrested during the two phased operation while 14 security personnel have been martyred and 53 others injured in 13 attacks by the terrorists. He told the media that 4,836 families registered as IDPs who fled during operation while Pak army provided basic necessities to 3,286 fled families.
Director General, ISPR Athar Abbas at the occasion told the journalists that Frontier Corp was responsible for the security of 5 out of 7 Tehsils of Mehmand agency while army was controlling the security of South and North Waziristan agencies.
