FIA officers express inability to give policy statement in corruption cases before senate committee

ISLAMABAD: Additional interior secretary and director immigration FIA have expressed their inability to give policy statement before Senate Standing Committee on Interior in connection with investigation into corruption cases pertaining to different departments. Committee meeting was deferred under protest due to objections raised by its members over non-participation of interior minister A Rehman Malik, interior secretary Qamar Zaman Chaudhry and DG FIA.

FIA officials were required to give briefing to the committee in regard to investigation into corruption cases in various departments. Chairman Committee senator Talha Mehmood inquired from additional interior secretary Muhammad Shahid and director immigration FIA if they could give final replies to questions to be raised by members of committee during briefing. Additional interior secretary said only interior minister or interior secretary could give reply with reference to any report of FIA.

The committee while expressing displeasure over it said government officers did not attach any importance to parliamentary committee. Senator Nayyar Bokhari said bureaucracy particularly FIA officers were trying to befool parliamentarians.

Chairman committee senator Talha Mehmood postponed the committee meeting for a week and directed FIA to present complete inquiry reports in respect of corruption cases related to health ministry, PIA, FBR, CDA and NADRA in committee meeting next week.

Chairman committee also directed interior minister, interior secretary, DG FIA to attend the upcoming meeting along with the concerned officers._ONLINE
