KARACHI: The Managing Director of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Aijaz Haroon resigned from his position following four days of protests by employees of the airline. Federal Minister for Defence Ahmed Mukhtar has informed media that his resignation had been accepted and that a new managing director will be appointed in due time. Further Rehman Malik said that all three demands of the joint action committee had been fulfilled. New name for Managing Director is under consideration and will be announced in due time.
According to the details the negotiation that were going on between the Government and Unions representing the striking staff of PIA have been successful resulting in resignation of Managing Director PIA Aijaz Haroon.
President of the Pakistan Airline Pilots Association (Palpa) Captain Sohail Baluch said that PIA will resume its flight operations from tonight as protesting employees called off the strike. At Karachi’s Jinnah International airport, PIA employees celebrated the announcement of the resignation of Haroon.
Earlier this day, police baton charged protesting PIA employees, detained 20 of them, as protests turned violent. this was second day when all of the carrier’s flights remained grounded for a second day resulting in the cancellation of around 400 flights, the stranding of 60,000 passengers and causing losses of around $22 million for the airline, which is on the brink of bankruptcy.
