Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari has advised to undertake completion of small dams on war footings as this would not only help in the development of land and water resources to harness their full potential but would also generate employment opportunities for the poor besides distribution of state lands of the command areas amongst the poor women. This he said during a presentation given to him at Aiwan-e-Sadr today on the progress made so far in building small and medium dams in various parts of the country.
The presentation was attended by Mr. M. Salman Faruqui, Secretary General to the President, Syed Murad Ali Shah, Minister for Finance Sindh Government, Mr. Jam Saifullah Dharejo, Minister for Irrigation Sindh Government, senior officials of the concerned federal and provincial departments, , Chairman WAPDA Mr. Shakil Durrani and the Spokesperson to the President Mr. Farhatullah Babar .
Briefing media Spokesperson to the President Mr. Farhatullah Babar said that in line with the vision of the President to concentrate on building a number of small to medium dams in the country to save precious water resources for their optimum utilization, the presentation was in continuity of the previous meetings held to review the progress made so far in this regard.
Mr. Babar said that the President during the meeting emphasized upon adoption of sprinkler irrigation and solar pumps irrigation. He said the Government has envisioned taking advantage of public private partnership in such projects to ensure efficiency, effective monitoring and early completion of the projects. He said that the Government was tapping all available resources to ensure requisite financing of these projects.
The briefing informed that financial assistance of US $700 million from Exim Bank of China has been arranged. It also informed that 200,000 acres of land will come under command areas of the three dams namely Derawat, Nai Gaj and Naulong.
The President hoped that the involvement of Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC) and IWHR (Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research) China, being the specialized organizations, would help utilizing full benefits of small/medium dam projects. He said that the Government has undertaken special security measures to ensure the security of local as well as foreign nationals associated with these projects.
