OIC Secretary General condemns burning of Churches in Indonesia

JEDDAH: The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, in a statement issued in Jeddah today, strongly condemned the reported incident of attack and burning of churches in Central Java district in Indonesia yesterday by unruly mobs.

The OIC Secretary General stated that violence and intolerance of other religious faiths and destruction of places of worship went against the basics tenets of Islam. It also goes against the OIC position on interfaith harmony. He stressed on the fact that Muslims and Christians had been living in peace and harmony side by side since fourteen centuries and such deplorable incidents negate Islamic tradition and culture. He called for an immediate end to the violence and for restoration of calm. He also expressed his confidence that the concerned authorities in Indonesia would take all necessary steps in this regard and would initiate actions against those involved in the incident.
