ISLAMABAD – PPP leader and Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) former president Aitzaz Ahsan on Monday said the blasphemy law should not be changed, adding if the late Salmaan Taseer had committed blasphemy, he should have been punished under the law.
Talking to reporters at the Supreme Court, he said no amendment of any kind should be made in the blasphemy law and it should remain intact at any cost. He said Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani had ensured implementation on PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif’s agenda, so the latter should support the government.
To one question, he said he was not offered the governorship of the Punjab, adding “better and more eligible people than me are waiting for this slot.” He said, being the PPP co-chairman, President Asif Ali Zardari would decide about the appointment of the governor. He said the culture of intolerance and element of violence had alarmingly increased, which was dangerous and needed to be overcome.
