KOHAT: Sixteen people have been killed while 19 others injured when a suicide bomb exploded in Tirah valley congested market on Wednesday. The explosion took place at the busy bus terminal in main Tirah bazaar, Kohat police chief Dilawar Bangash said. Bangash said that a blast was suicidal, adding that the death toll is likely to rise.
Emergency was declared in the district hospital and security was put on high alert. The critically injured were being shifted to Peshawar.
Local police spokesman Fazal Naeem said the bomber approached the door of Orakzai agency bound bus carrying passengers and detonated his explosives. Earlier it appeared the bomb was planted in a vehicle parked at the main bus stand, but Banghash said that “now we have found the head and legs of the suicide bomber”.
This is the second blast in last 24 houres. Fifty persons were killed when two bombers hit a government compound in Ghalanai, headquarters of Mohmand Agency on Tuesday.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf raza Gilani strongly condemned the suicide attack in a congested bazaar in Kohat, that killed several people. The President in his message expressed condolences with the families of those who lost their lives in the cowardly terrorist act.
President Zardari said that the government and the people are determined to defeat terrorism and such gruesome acts cannot deter the resolve of the nation, which remained united to defeat terrorists. President Zardari asked the law enforcement agencies to take more measures to protect people from incidents of terrorism.
The Prime Minister, who is in Turkey on a three day official visit, expressed deep shock and grief over the sad incident, in which several innocent persons were killed. He conveyed his grief to the bereaved families and directed hospital authorities to provide best possible treatment to the injured.
