DHAKA: Around 40 people went missing while eight others swam ashore when a crowded bus plunged into a river near the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka here on Sunday, police said. Sub-inspector Sheikh Farid said the divers of fire brigade were trying to find the sunken bus in the 40-foot (12-metre) depths of the Turag river,.
“The bus was packed with around 50 passengers. It lost control as it approached a bridge. It then swerved and missed the bridge before plunging into the river at about 11:00 am (0500 GMT),” he said.
Police and fire officials rushed to the spot at Aminbazar, 20 kilometres (12 miles) west of Dhaka, but the river’s powerful current was impeding rescue efforts, he said.-SANA
