Parliament has to decide about Musharraf’s future: Gilani

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that the parliament that is supreme and sovereign had to take any decision regarding lodging an FIR against former President Pervaiz Musharraf. Talking to media here on Tuesday, the government in principle had decided to abolish the National Security Council and the Law Minister had been directed to present a bill before the parliament in this regard.

He said the council was constituted despite opposition by major political parties including PPP and PML-N and it was formed under an Act of Parliament; therefore, the parliament would undo this act with simple majority. Answering a question regarding confrontation with Punjab government, the Prime Minister said PPP stands for greater political reconciliation and it has been decided that both the coalition partners in Punjab would keep silence until the return of the President.

He said the federal government did not support any move to destabilize the Punjab government as it intends a stable political system. He said the Chief Minister Punjab during a call on him yesterday had said that his party does not intend to participate in the long march but it wants restoration of judiciary.

Earlier, addressing inaugural ceremony of Islamabad Sewage Treatment Plant that was completed at a cost of over two point seven billion rupees with financial and technical support of the French government, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said that the present government is determined to ensure provision of basic amenities to the people without any discrimination.

The Prime Minister said Pakistan People’s Party which was a moderate and progressive party had always worked for strengthening the federation and democratic system was committed to bring out the country from the current crises. He said the party that was following agenda of late Benazir Bhutto would make sure to protect the rights of the down-trodden.

He asked the PPP workers to remain in discipline and work for strengthening democratic system and resolving the problems of the masses. Taking serious note of negative sloganeering against CDA Chairman in the function by some PPP workers, he said being democrats the workers should contact the leaders and the parliamentarians to solve the problems.

He said the government believed in working on merit and good governance and gives high esteem to the bureaucracy therefore all postings and transfers were being made by the federal government purely on merit. Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani asked the CDA to expedite efforts for provision of basic amenities in all sectors especially in slums.

He said the federal government had decided to construct one million houses under the Prime Minister’s plan and the CDA should work in coordination with the Ministry of Housing to complete this project in the federal capital. In his welcome address, Chairman CDA Tariq Mehmood highlighted basic features of the treatment plant and said it would treat seventeen million gallon water daily that would help improve environment situation in twin cities. He also highlighted various development projects being completed by the Civic Body to ensure civic amenities to the people.-SANA
