Minister pressurizing Mukhtar Mai to drop charges

Mukhtar Mai’s case is due for a supreme court hearing some time next week, and there are some reports that she is being pressurized by Federal Defence Production Minister Abdul Qayyum Jatoi to drop the case. Somehow, this has not received the attention of the media, and therefore, we request women rights activists and the media to investigate this further and generate enough pressure to ensure that the culprits in Mukhtar Mai’s case do not escape justice.

22 June, 2002: Mukhtar Mai, aged 30, is gang raped allegedly on the orders of a village council in the southern Punjab village of Meerwala in Pakistan. She took settlement money provided to her by the government following the court case, and opened a center for refuge and education, the Mukhtar Mai Women’s Welfare Organization
