ISLAMABAD: Hundreds of lawyers and political activists have gathered at the Constitution Avenue here on Thursday staging protest demonstration to put pressure on government for the early restoration of deposed judges including Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry. Large gathering of lawyers was lead by President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Chaudhry Atizaz Ahsan, Ali Ahmad Kurd and former Justice Tariq Mahmood.
Talking to media outside Parliament House Atizaz Ahsan has said lawyers want to strengthen the parliamentary democracy in the country. He said lawyers were not against political stability, adding parliament could not be strengthened without strong and independent judiciary.
Ahsan said only bold and free judges could lay the foundation of independent judiciary. “Lawyers are protesting as government has not honoured its promises yet,” he said, adding lawyers of all districts and divisions are taking part in the protest. Meanwhile, lawyers have boycotted the court proceedings across the country and a sit-in will be staged at Constitution Avenue.
In Lahore, the lawyers’ community has boycotted courts and has ten out rally in metropolis. The Lahore High Court Bar and Lahore Bar hold their general body meeting at the Mall Road. The rally was later joined by political and human rights activists, students, and members of civil society. The participants wearing black strips hold black flags, banners and placards. Lawyers in other parts of the country also hold sit-in protest outside city courts.
