The Pakistan’s 61st Independence Day celebration at the George Brown Convention Center at Houston, TX organized by Pakistani American Council of Texas (PACT) with the collaboration of Friends of Pakistan (FOP) on August 9th 2008 was a spectacular success. Super star artists Jawad Ahmed and Fakhir were present and they charged the crowd that had turned up in record numbers to spontaneously cheer Jawad & Fakhir who spiritedly sang popular national songs and gave a truly scintillating performance.
The arrangements were meticulously planned and executed to perfection. The organizers Sajjad Burki, President of PACT and Friends of Pakistan Houston Chapter, Najam Shaikh, vice president FOP Houston, Zafar Tahir, Secretary General FOP Houston, Mohammad Zaheer, Moon Khan and all the team deserve accolades for their efforts in arranging the highly enjoyable and entertaining program. Sarfaraz Khan, founder & chairman of Friends of Pakistan especially arrived in Houston for this mega event and delivered a motivational speech to charged the crowd of over 15,000 thousands.
A large number of dignitaries, including Congresswoman Sheila Jackson, Congressman Al Green, Mayor of Houston, Pakistan Consul General Houston, Aqil Nadeem and several other local and statewide dignitaries graced the occasion. The presence of the surging crowd that according to one estimate approximated 15,000 plus seemed to testify to the overwhelming support extended by the community to the program organizers. Their presence till the very end of the function was vividly indicative of the mood. Major restaurants in Houston and a large number of vendors had also put up stalls in the convention center to serve their choicest dishes to the mirthful community of Pakistani Americans and they certainly added to the gaiety and jollity of the occasion.
The speeches were brief but impressive. Congressman Al Green congratulated members of the Pakistani-American community on the Independence Day. He also acknowledged the multifarious contributions of the community in enriching the Houston scene – socially, culturally, academically and professionally. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson also appreciated Pakistani-American community for their participation in local system and thanks the community for her support and she promised to help Pakistan all the way. Consul General Aqil Nadeem, who has just taken charge of his assignment, appeared suave and blend and impressed everyone with his civil disposition.
