Sherry Rehman has said that the impeachment of the President will be carried out in accordance with the Parliamentary rules and regulations. she said all the constitutional, legal and democratic ways would be adopted to complete the process of the impeachment. She said after the passage of resolutions by the Provincial Assemblies, the President should read the writing on the wall and resign to avoid the political uncertainty. Federal Information and Broadcasting Minister Sherry Rehman said that President Musharraf has under Article 44, if he wants to resign, he can do so.
She said the coalition partners have more than the required majority in the Parliament for the impeachment of the President. She said votes would decide the fate of the President; however, he has the right to defend himself. Following the Senate Committee for information meeting, Sherry Rehman talking to the media said that no one would be allowed to interfere in the parliament’s authority. “There exists a difference between the trial and impeachment, impeaching is within the parliament’s authority”, she clarified. Sherry Rehman said that the arguments against President Musharraf were solid and the impeachment process hinged on the vote count.
While Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi has said that the President should tender his resignation without any further delay. Talking to journalists at the Multan Airport, Qureshi said Musharraf had better step down within two days to avoid impeachment. Responding to a question, he said that the army and the US respect the constitution of Pakistan. He further said that if PML-N Chief, Nawaz Sharif would like to become the President of Pakistan, then the coalition government could consider it. Qureshi said that the PPP led government is strengthening the national institutions.
Prominent political analyst Gen (Retd) Talat Masood has said that President Musharraf would step down to avoid trial and facing impeachment motion. Talking to VOA, Talat Masood said that President was trying to make his position better through giving and take formula and a package like NRO to let off him from facing any case. About President Musharraf’s allegations against PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif that he was responsible for political uncertainty in the country, he said Musharraf had toppled the government of Nawaz in 1999 and sent him behind the bars.
He further said people were against the military interference in politics. He stated that PPP was also using Nawaz Sharif in this regard and PPP has agreement in this regard with super power. Commenting on the role of Army in politics, he said it has aligned itself from the politics.
Jamaat-i-Islami Acting Amir Syed Munawar Hassan said that all arrangements have been made to allow safe exit to President Pervez Musharraf under the veil of his impeachment. In a statement issued from Mansoora, he termed as deplorable and shocking the Pakistan People’s Party ministers’ statements that President will not be impeached if he decides to step down. Syed Munawar Hassan stressed on the President’s impeachment under the Constitution of Pakistan and awarding an exemplary punishment to him after lodging a case against him. Such action is imperative for maintaining justice and promoting democracy in the country, he added.-SANA
