Musharraf’s impeachment-Need of Time

Federal Minister for Education Ahsan Iqbal has said that impeachment of the President would promote national harmony and strengthen the federation. Addressing a news conference in Islamabad on Saturday, he said the impeachment move had become inevitable because of the policies of the President.

He dispelled the impression that the impeachment would lead to confrontation and said instead it would strengthen democracy and bring harmony amongst different pillars of the state. Mr. Ahsan Iqbal assured the business community that the impeachment would end political crisis and uncertainty which would induce investment.

He said if an ordinary citizen or the Prime Minister is accountable then there is no justification not to hold the President accountable. The Education Minister said the impeachment would convey a strong message to the world that Pakistan believes in rule of law.

Whereas Pakistan Muslim League (N) Secretary General Iqbal Zafar Jhagra has said that the impeachment of President Pervez Musharraf has become the first priority of the ruling coalition and they are also committed to restore deposed judges. In an interview he said both the issues are very important. He said PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari has himself announced to restore the judges immediately after the impeachment of the President. He said the coalition is heading towards achieving an important goal.

Interesting Pakistan Muslim League (Q) MNA Riaz Hussain Pirzada has said that the law about violation of party discipline is not applicable to voting on the impeachment motion against the President. In an interview, he said it is moral obligation of a member to vote as per direction of the party which gave him ticket during elections. To a question, he said it would be premature to say who would vote for and against the move from PML (Q). He said the Central Executive Committee of the party is meeting tomorrow to discuss the issue and formulate a strategy.

While Pakistan Muslim League-Q President, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain has held an important meeting with President Musharraf here. In the meeting, Shujaat suggested that the President should face impeachment democratically. During meeting with Musharraf, PML-Q President said that country couldn’t afford confrontation any more. Shujaat also told Musharraf that if the President would face impeachment democratically, then the PML-Q would stand by him.

However, Chaudhry Shujaat made it clear that if the President tries to use 58-2(b), then he will have no support from PML-Q. Shujaat suggested Musharraf that he should step down before the start of the impeachment proceedings and the president should avail the opportunity to make an honorable exit.-SANA
