ISLAMABAD: The government has embarked upon a plan to establish a well integrated transport system to accelerate the economic growth and poverty reduction in the country. Sources informed under a five years strategy road network will be improved with construction and improvement of 21100 KM long roads throughout the country. Under this programme 7000 KM long new roads will be constructed while 14100 KM long existing roads will be rehabilitated by the end of 2010.
They said that private sector will also be involved in the improvement of road networks. They said that in addition to the highways public sector programme several projects would be completed by the private sector. The programme will be completed at a cost of 573 billion rupees by the end of 2010. The federal government has also decided to establish Federal Road Fund to streamline the financing of national highways.
