ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that his government is focusing on improving the agriculture sector to overcome the food shortage and it seeks Italian cooperation to develop a mechanized agriculture in the country. He was talking to an Italian delegation headed by Giuseppe Vegas, Minister of State for Economic and Finance, who called on him here on Monday. Ambassador of Italy to Pakistan was also present in the meeting.
The Prime Minister said that Pakistan and Italy enjoy close friendly relations covering diplomatic, political, economic, security and agriculture sectors. The Prime Minister said that Pakistan accords priority to its close relationship with Italy and is keen to further expand these relations in other sectors as well. He discussed with the Italian Minister the issue of better market access for Pakistani products and asked the Italian Minister to support Pakistan in European Union in this regard as Pakistan would like to further enhance its bilateral trade with Italy.
In order to enhance people to people contact between the two countries, the Prime Minister called upon the need for exchange of visits of parliamentary delegations besides further strengthening the cooperation on the cultural side and to preserve heritage of old cities.
Mr. Giuseppe Vega expressed confidence that the bilateral relations between the two countries would further strengthen as both the countries have common vision on important international issues and Italy thinks Pakistan is playing an important role in the regional stability which ultimately impacts the world stability. He also extended invitation to the Prime Minister to visit Italy at his early convenience.-SANA
