ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that the government is committed to protecting the rights of minorities as enshrined in the constitution and as envisaged by the Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah. The Prime Minister expressed these views in a meeting with a delegation of Peace Worldwide headed by Country Director, Mr. Hector Aleem, at the Prime Minister’s House on Friday.
The Prime Minister said that regularization of katchi abadis and providing them basic civic amenities is a major priority of the government and part of the PPP manifesto. The Prime Minister said the government of Pakistan is committed to the principle of human honour and dignity in accordance with great golden traditions of Islam. He referred to the constitution of Pakistan which guarantees equality to all citizens and ensures non discriminatory practices against any segment of society.
He said Islam our faith teaches mutual understanding, universal brotherhood and inter-faith harmony and the government will ensure that minorities are not discriminated against at any level. The Prime Minister said that the meritorious service of the Christian community in the field of education and health sectors cannot be forgotten. He also told the delegation that he himself went to a missionary school.
The Prime Minister said that the government is committed to ensuring the supremacy of parliament so that it can legislate according to the aspirations of the people. He said the decision of merging the Law and Justice, Human Rights and Parliamentary Affairs Divisions has been taken to remove any discrimination in existing laws. He said that present government is true representative of people and told the delegation that he has directed all the ministers to hold open kutcheris to redress the grievances of the people at local level.
The delegation told the Prime Minister that they are loyal citizens of Pakistan and are fully committed to the concept and ideology of Pakistan. He said the minority community cannot think of blaspheming the Holy Prophet or the Quran. Mr. Hector Haleem assured the Prime Minister for his organization full support and appreciated the government’s efforts for the welfare of Christian community and overall improvement in the human rights in the country.
