ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that the government is committed to providing improved education and health facilities to the people at their doorstep as envisioned by Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed and provided in the manifesto of Pakistan People’s Party. The Prime Minister said this while talking to a delegation of National Commission of Human Development, led by Chairman Dr. Nasim Ashraf which called on him at the PM’s House this afternoon.
The Prime Minister said that the people of Pakistan have voted for the reform-oriented policies of the ruling coalition parties and despite facing serious challenges the government would give priority to these sectors in the next year’s budget. The Prime Minister said that the government will support the NCHD’s initiatives by providing financial support while the NCHD should generate additional resources through external funding.
Dr. Nasim Ashraf informed the meeting that NCHD’s initiatives focus on improving education and basic healthcare at the grassroots level in the underdeveloped areas of the country. He said the programme, based on public-private partnership provides employment to more than 45,000 people all over the country. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister and Board Member of NCHD, Ms. Shahnaz Wazir Ali told the meeting that the programmes for providing literacy and training Lady Health Workers have been effective in providing basic education and health facilities to the people. In 2006 UNESCO’s best literacy programme award was given to NCHD, she said. -SANA
