ISLAMABAD: Islamabad-based writers and intellectuals overwhelmingly welcomed the decision of the government regarding the termination of controversial and costly nation-dividing Kalabagh dam project. “This momentous and visionary decision of the government will give a new lease of life to the Federation and build ladders of love among the inhabitants of federating units,” said Pakistan Intellectual Forum (PIF).
In a resolution passed here, in which more than sixty writers, researchers and activists hailing from all the four provinces and Hazara and Gilgit were all appreciative of the timely and wise decision of the coalition government adding that “the government needs to halt all such projects which harm and divide the nation.” They especially thanked the top leadership of the coalition parties including Senator Asif Ali Zardari, Asfand Yar Wali, Maulana Fazul Rehman, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani and Federal Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervez Ashraf .
Hashim Abro of the PIF said that KBD project was anti-life, anti-environment and anti-ecology project and now in the wake of this apt and popular decision of the government millions of lives, their livelihood would be saved in the smaller provinces including Sindh, NWFP and Balochistan.” “There is nothing higher than Pakistan, there is nothing more important than the federation of Pakistan, if any anything causes chaos, mistrust, misunderstanding instead of love and amity, and affection should be buried once and once for all, hence, the present government has proved through this decision that it is for the people, with the people and from the people ” Abro maintained.
Abro urged the government to tap Thar coal and other environment-friendly means of energy for sustainable development, peace and progress of the country.
