Govt to ensure political stability, eco growth: PM


ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has said that the national priorities of the Government are to ensure political stability, economic growth and social development. He was speaking at a reception hosted by him in honour of foreign diplomats in Islamabad on Monday. The Prime Minister said people of Pakistan overwhelmingly supported democratic forces in the recent elections and people now have expectation of a better and brighter future.

He said the Government has embarked on an ambitious agenda to eradicate poverty, provide employment and generate sustained growth. He said security and stability is critical for our future prosperity. Pakistan is committed to fight terrorism and believes that its root causes should be removed. The Prime Minister said the Government has evolved a comprehensive three-pronged strategy to combat terrorism that is designed to respond to our peculiar environment. The strategy combines political, socio-economic and security tracks.

It envisages dialogue with the tribes that are willing to disarm and join the political mainstream. It involves measures to ensure development, employment, education and health facilities. The strategy retains the option of the use of force where necessary.

The Prime Minister made it abundantly clear that there will be no negotiations or compromise with terrorists. Pakistan’s security forces will remain deployed to meet any threat posed by terrorists and an effective mechanism will ensure implementation of the agreements reached with the tribes. Pakistan’s territory will not be allowed to be used against anyone. At the same time, all counter terrorism measures within Pakistan will be taken by our own security forces.

Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani said PPP and its coalition partners are committed to ensuring the supremacy of parliament and strengthening of democratic institutions with the requisite balance between the legislature, the executive and the judiciary. We are also committed to ensure the independence and the freedom of media. The Prime Minister said Pakistan seeks friendship with all countries and is committed to resolving all issues through dialogue and compromise.

Appreciating the support of the development partners, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for greater market access, transfer of technology and more foreign direct investments. He said it is endeavor of the government to exploit potential of agriculture and increase industrial productivity as well as boost services sector.

He expressed the confidence that the policies of liberalization, deregulation and privatization will attract both domestic and foreign investment. He said despite recent global economic challenges, the fundamentals of our economy remain strong and resilient. Pakistan, therefore, seeks mutually beneficial economic and commercial relations with the international community.

Pakistan also believes that there should be a level playing field between the developed and the developing economies. Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani called for greater international collaboration to address the challenges of food, energy and water security. He said it is the policy of the new Government to increase national agricultural output, develop alternative energy sources and ensure more efficient water usage including constructions of reservoirs and dams.-SANA
