Country depends on constitution: Justice Iftikhar

FAISALABAD: Deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhamamd Chudhary has said that development and progress of the country depends on the implementation of the constitution. Addressing a lawyers’ convention here on Sunday, he said lawyers, media and civil society had offered sacrifices for the restoration of judiciary movement in the country. President Supreme Court Bar Association Aitzaz Aahsan also spoke on the occasion.

Deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has said that new PCO judges will be punished for ignoring the Supreme Court order as it restrained all judges from taking new oath immediately after the enforcement of emergency. Addressing lawyers’ convention here, Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry said that SC had immediately given a decision against emergency in view of the situation emanating from the slapping of emergency on Nov.3 and had restrained all judges from taking new oath, but in spite of that some persons violating the constitution took new oath.

Now, the people have decided that there would be rule of law in the country and the fate of the country would now be decided in light of the Nov. 3, 2007 orders and all those violating the SC Nov. 3 decision would be punished. He said that the judiciary in the past gave decisions in accordance with the swishes of the dictators and now the people have to decide as to which type of judiciary they want—the final decision lies with the people, he declared.

He said that Karachi incidents showed the weakening of the society. He said that the independence of judiciary could be ensured with the unity of the Bench and Bar. Earlier, Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry had left Islamabad Saturday afternoon at 3.00 P.M. for Faisalabad in a caravan en-route Motorway. SCBA president, Aitzaz Ahsan was also accompanying him and the caravan had reached here after 8 hours of journey, where he was given a rousing welcome. Justice Iftikhar’s address was delayed for 16 hours, meanwhile, torrential rains lashed the city, but the lawyers’ community stayed undaunted for hearing his address.-SANA
