QUETTA: Baz Mohammad Kakar, president of the Balochistan Bar Association, has said that the lawyers community and the legal fraternity will never accept a person-specific constitutional package. Talking to the BBC, he said holding of Long March by the lawyers is part of our ongoing protest for the restoration of judges. “Lawyers from Balochistan are playing their due role in ongoing protest for the restoration of deposed judges and an independent judiciary. Lawyers’ organizations are in contact with all political and social organizations for ‘Long March’ from June 10,” he said.
Lawyers and civil society will not accept any person-specific constitutional package. We rejected Gen. Musharraf’s conditional offer for the restoration of deposed judges in the past, he added. The people of the country came on the streets for an independent judiciary, which may provide them justice and help improving the system, because, the judiciary has been providing safeguards to dictators during the last 60 years, he maintained.
The people have attached high hopes with an independent judiciary. Therefore, they want to restore deposed judges without any condition at the November 3, position. The independence of judiciary is imperative for the safeguards of basic human rights, he said and added that despite having a great democracy, the Indian judiciary is also not enjoying full independence, while Pakistani lawyers, civil society and democratic political parties are striving hard of an independent judiciary.-SANA
