Senate Committee grill PTA for issuance of unauthorized SIMs
ISLAMABAD: Chairman PTA said that Pakistan was one of the fastest growing Countries in South East Asia witnessing growth of mobile industry where in 2003; 6.5 million mobile phones were in use in Pakistan which rose to 85.6 million in April this year. While giving briefing to the Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat, Chairman PTA Maj. Gen ® Shahzada Alam disclosed that cellular mobiles witnessed a tremendous growth during the last six years and that more than 90 percent population has been consulted so far. The Chairman told the Committee that PTCL spent Rs. 1.2 billion for upgrading and that approximately US $ 3.4 million are being spent by each module operator whereas the expenditures are equally shared by all mobile operators.
The Senate Committee took strong note of the issuance of SIMs by the cellular companies to the subscribers without proper verification from the NADRA and directed the PTA to properly investigate the matter and fix the responsibility. Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat, which met at the Parliament House under the Chairmanship of Senator Abdul Ghaffar Qureshi, has expressed its dissatisfaction over the procedure adopted by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) while issuing new SIMS to the Mobile subscribers.-SANA
