LAHORE: Salman Taseer has taken oath as 27th Governor of Punjab province. Chief Justice Lahore High Court (LHC) Justice Zahid Hussain administered oath to Salman Taseer at an oath taking ceremony held here at Governor House on Friday. Referring to the public mandate received by the PPP, the governor said the democratic process would be promoted in Punjab. Mr Taseer said many people had come to Punjab to loot and plunder, while the late Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto had won the hearts of the Punjabis. He also chanted the slogans of ‘Jeevey Bhutto’ and ‘Sada Bhutto’.
However, Pakistan Muslim League-N boycotted the oath taking ceremony. Address after taking oath of the office, Governor Punjab Salman Taseer made it clear that he was representative of Pakistan People’s Party’s federal government. He announced that the doors of Governor House were open for the people, adding that all the political workers were equal for him. While the PML-Q was represented by Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Zaheeruddin and former foreign minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri. Former caretaker finance minister Salman Shah was also present. The ceremony was conducted by Punjab Chief Secretary Javed Mahmood.
Amid chants of ‘Jeay Bhutto’ and ‘Zinda hai Benazir zinda hai,’ Mr. Taseer vowed to get young PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari elected to the National Assembly from Punjab. He said he would work to convert Punjab into a PPP stronghold, like Larkana. Notification of the appointment of Salman Taseer as Governor Punjab has been issued here by the Cabinet Division on the orders of the President of Pakistan. Interestingly The announcement of his appointment was made by the President earlier that was highly criticized by the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz who is in charge of the affairs in the province.
