ISLAMABAD: Federal Law Minister Farooq H. Naek informed the Senate on Monday that the present
government has not authorized tapping of telephone of any person. Responding to a point of order raised by Tahir Mashhadi in the house, he said under the law in vogue the Director-General
Intelligence Bureau can monitor telephone of an individual with specific permission of the Prime Minister in very exceptional cases involving interest, integrity and security of Pakistan.
He said the Bureau is undertaking activities in the public interest and for the security of the country and can pass on the information only to the Prime Minister for the purpose of counter-intelligence and anti-terrorism. Replying to a point of order raised by Prof. Khurshid Ahmad, leader of the house Mian Raza Rabbani said the present coalition government in no case will compromise sovereignty of the country vis-à-vis any foreign power. To another point raised by leader of the opposition Kamil Ali Agha, leader of the house Mian Raza Rabbani said the government acted adequately on the issue of blasphemous caricatures.-SANA
