ISLAMABAD: The Federal Information Minister Sherry Rehman has expressed the government’s commitment to protect the rights of each deprived segment of the society including the journalists, laborers and workers. She was addressing a seminar organized by All Pakistan Newspaper employees confederation in connection with the labor day here on Thursday.
The Minister said the PPP government had always initiated workers friendly policies and will continue to do so with the cooperation of the people. She said the labor policy and other workers related legislation were the hallmarks of the PPP government. Sherry Rehman said in clear terms that no one would be allowed to play with the rights of the laborers and poor segments of the society.
Referring specifically to the Journalist community, she said the government would repeal all the media related black laws aimed at choking the voice of freedom of expression. She said, “We believe in freedom of the media and the news channels would never be blocked for airing dissenting views.”
The Information Minister said the media persons were more exposed to violence, therefore, a victims fund would be established for them. She said a summary in this regard had already been forwarded and all the killed, injured and kidnapped journalists would be compensated from this fund.
She assured the journalist community that the wage board award would be implemented. She however, asked the media to strengthen the hands of the democratic government and give it time to address their grievances. On this occasion Senator Babar Awan said that he stands by the journalist community and would fight for their rights at all appropriate forums.
Representatives of the All Pakistan Newspaper employees confederation welcomed lifting ban on trade and students union and expressed the hope that the new government would take concrete steps so that their demands could be met.-SANA
