ISLAMABAD: Information Minister Sherry Rehman Friday moved resolution to lift restrictions on the media that the later termed a gift of the incumbent government to media. The proposed parliamentary bill sought an end to curbs on live broadcasts, cancellations of licenses and confiscation of equipment striking right at the roots of the freedom of expression.
Government tabled the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) amendment bill in National Assembly that was sent to the concerned parliamentary committee for further proceedings. Sherry Rehman, while speaking to media expressed excitement and said that the bill would be a gift for the media that would remove all the restrictions imposed on the press.
The Minister reaffirmed that government would give media freedom for broadcasting whatever was fit. Spelling put the bar that would stand null with the bill, Sherry Rehman said that there were ten clauses in the PEMRA Ordinance that had put ban on freedom of expression and speech.-SANA
