ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Thursday sued fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar for Rs 200 million for making allegedly defamatory comments against the Board, its Chairman and the national cricket team after he was banned for five years. “We demand immediate retraction of allegations from Shoaib Akhtar in an interview, he gave to a TV channel,” said Taffazul H Rizvi, PCB Legal Advisor. Terming Akhtar’s statements as malicious and baseless, Rizvi said, “He must apologise and pay damages of Rs 100 million to the PCB and damages of Rs 100 million to the Board Chairman Dr Nasim Ashraf.”

In a letter made public by the board, lawyers for PCB said that Shoaib Akhtar should pay Dr Nasim Ashraf Rs 100 million “for defaming him personally” and the same amount again “for sullying the name of the Pakistan Cricket Board and the Pakistan cricket team.”

The letter also asked Shoaib Akhtar to tender an unconditional apology and retract his earlier statements against the PCB and its Chairman in the same mode and manner in which they were made. It was further said in the letter that if Shoaib Akhtar fails to do so, the Pakistan Cricket Board is authorized to take further legal action against him.-SANA
