SRINAGAR: A team of Jammu-based lawyers have visited the political prisoners in Kotbalwal Jail Jammu on the directions of High Court. The team was, however, unable to meet senior Hurriyat Conference (G) leader Masrat Alam who was beaten and assaulted inside the jail recently.
Sources said the team visited the Kotbalwal jail to asses the situation there following reports that condition of the political prisoners was “miserable” due to highhandedness of the jail authorities. Justice Muhammad Yaqoob Mir had issued orders on March 19 asking the district session judge Jammu, chief medical officer Jammu and deputy commissioner Jammu to send a team of lawyers to ascertain the conditions of the Kashmiri prisoners in Kotbalwal.
The team is expected to submit its report to the High Court by Tuesday, said the sources.
The High Court had specifically mentioned that the team of visiting lawyers should meet Masrat Alam. However, the team could not meet Alam as he was in Srinagar for court hearing.
The High Court had earlier ordered the Kashmir High Court Bar Association to send its team to Kotbalwal. On March 17, a three-member Bar team led by the Bar Association president Nazir Ahmad Ronga was assaulted outside the Kotbalwal by a group of Hindu extremists affiliated with Shiv Sena. Meanwhile, Masrat Alam was produced in the court of first district and sessions court Srinagar, but the judge was not present. The next hearing of the case has been scheduled for April 7.-SANA
