ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party on Saturday nominated Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani as candidate of the PPP and allies for the slot of Prime Minister. PPP Spokesman Farhatullah Babar read out a statement on behalf of PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari at Zardari House here on Saturday evening.
This brings to an end speculations about the nominee of the largest party in the National Assembly for the office of the premiership. The PPP has finalized his name in consultation with other coalition partners and he would be their joint candidate in the contest being held on Monday. The statement of the PPP Co-Chairperson says that that Makhdoom Yousuf Raza Gillani is being nominated after consultations with all democratic parties in the coalition and with the Chairman of the party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
The statement also recalls the sacrifices rendered by Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and countless workers for the cause of democracy. Replying to a question Mr. Fartullah Babar said the new PM would not be a stopgap arrangement.
Following is the statement issued by PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari while announcing the nomination. “The Pakistan Peoples Party and the democratic parties in the coalition have completed consultations to make public the name of its candidate for the office of the Prime Minister. “After holding consultations within the Pakistan Peoples Party, with the coalition partners and with Chairman PPP Mr. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari consensus has been achieved in nominating the candidate for the office of Prime Minister.
“I have great pleasure in calling upon MakhdoomYousuf Raza Gillani in the name of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto to accept the heavy responsibility and lead the coalition government and the nation to greater heights and a glorious future. Makhdoom Yousuf Raza Gillani is not afraid to lead and he knows the way. “My thoughts and prayers are with Makhdoom Yousuf Raza Gillani, the coalition government and the people of Pakistan. I wish them all success in the challenges that lie ahead.
“On this occasion my thoughts go to Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto who led from the front the fight for democracy and laid down her life. I also recall the sacrifices of those countless martyrs who valiantly fought along with her throughout the years and died for the cause. Their sacrifices have illumined the path that will be traversed by the generations to come.”-SANA
