ISLAMABAD: Family of Pakistan People’s Party’s nominated candidate for premiership Yousaf Raza Gillani has been involving in politics sine 1921. His grand-grand father was member of Legislative Assembly of United India. Let alone the political background, his belonging to the Gillani family is another cause of his popularity. Defeating Fakhr Imam, Yousaf Raza Gillani was elected as Chairman District Council of Multan in 1983. He got victory in elections held in 1985 on non-party basis. Mr. Gillani decided to join PPP in 1987. In 1988 he defeated Mian Nawaz Sharif.
Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani returned to the National Assembly in February 18 elections from NA-151 Multan-IV beating his rival former Minister for Food and Agriculture Sikandar Hayat Bosan by about 32000 votes. Mr. Gillani won National Assembly elections for five times and also served as Speaker of the National Assembly from October 1993 to February 1997. He also remained as Federal Minister for Railways. He is Vice President of the PPP.
He was jailed in 2001 and spent several years and could not contest the 2002 elections. He could have secured his release from jail by ditching the party but refused to do so. Yousuf Raza Gillani was made the senior vice Chairman of the Party in 1998. He has a wife, four sons and one daughter.-SANA
