ZAB, Zia, Musharraf amended constitutions for personal interests

ISLAMABAD: Constitutional expert and former law minister Khalid Ranjha has said that Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Zia-ul-Haq and Pervez Musharraf had amended the constitution for personnel interests and now was the time to sit together to eliminate bad things from the constitution. Talking to a private TV channel, he said we should learn lesson from our past and should not repeat mistakes and should start a new era of progress and prosperity. “We are witnessing negative impact on the economy from last one year owing to law and order situation. These are the new challenges for the new government,” he said.

The new government should not focus on the issue of judges alone as President Pervez Musharraf had deposed judges in 1999 as well but judiciary endorsed the steps and later parliament also indemnified them. To a question, he said that the constitution is supreme and parliament has the right to make amendments in the constitution and no single person has the right to disfigure the laws.“Individual cannot amend the constitution. When constitution is in abeyance, Supreme Court has the authority to issue directives,” he said.

Restoration of judges is a positive approach, he said and added that both the parties have renewed their pledges to restore the judges. “These parties should also think about those judges who were deposed in 1999. They should restore the confidence of masses. We should not talk about restoration of individuals. We should go for restoration of judiciary not for judges.”-SANA
