ISLAMABAD: Senior Advocate of Supreme Court Athar Minallah has castigated the government for not allowing the deposed chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan, Justice Shakirullah Jan and former president Supreme Court Bar Association Justice (Retd) Tariq Mahmood to cast their votes in Monday’s general elections

Addressing a press conference in front of main gate of Balochistan House on the road leading to Judges Colony here on Monday, he said the government failed to fulfill its promise that it would allow the deposed chief justice, other deposed judges and detained lawyers to cast their votes.

He was flanked by Sardar Asmatullah, President High Court Bar Association Rawalpindi bench. Lawyers, members of the civil society and representatives of the NGOs were also present on the occasion. Athar Minallah said that the government by disallowing the deposed judges and detained lawyers to cast their votes had proved that it was involved in rigging of the elections.

He said that President Pervez Musharraf had used improper language against the deposed chief justice in his interview with Jamaima Khan published in a UK daily. He demanded that the president should seek apology from the whole nation for using indecent language against the deposed CJ.

As far as the deposed chief justice was concerned he was of the view that it was below his dignity to comment on the president’s interview, said the prominent lawyer. Earlier the heavy number of police deployed on the barricade on the road stopped Athar Minallah and others who were trying to go to meet the deposed CJ. Athar Minallah and others raised slogans for the restoration of the deposed judges, release of detained lawyers, supremacy of the constitution and rule of law. They also raised slogans against President Pervez Musharraf demanding his resignation.-SANA
