Zardari condemns violence on Election Day

ISLAMABAD: Co-Chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Asif Ali Zardari Monday strongly condemned the violence on polling day that resulted in the killing of more than five party activists and injury to hundreds others. According to a PPP statement issued here, Zardari demanded arrest and registration of cases against the culprits behind the murders and violence. The statement said that widespread incidents of firing, arson and kidnapping were reported on the Election Day.

According to reports that were pouring in by Monday evening five PPP activists were killed as the house of the party’s local official was set on fire in Khairpur in Sindh, the statement said. It said that in National Assembly constituency of NA-200 in Ghotki over 100 party activists were injured when their camp was fired upon by hired goons due to which polling at ten polling stations was suspended.

In PS-57 Badin, five people were injured, three of them seriously, as a result of firing on the PPP camp and over 57 party activists were injured in firing in Jaccobabad, Shahdadpur and Hyderabad, the statement further said. In the Punjab, two party activists were reportedly killed in Hafizabad while in the Frontier two party workers were killed in Karak and several injured in Mansehra and Abbotabad.

In the statement, Asif Ali Zardari accused that the violence was deliberately engineered to deter voters from casting votes. He directed the party cadres to file FIRs with the police and seek the help of the PPP’s lawyers Committees in filing and pursuing the cases against the people who instigated violence. Zardari also condoled with the families of those who were killed or injured in the violence, the statement concluded.
