ISLAMABAD: National Lawyers’ Convention held here Saturday under aegis of Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) announced a complete boycott of the courts from Monday for the restoration of judiciary, supremacy of the constitution and rule of law. The lawyers’ convention vowed and made it clear that they would not let anyone to hijack the lawyers’ movement. The lawyers also rejected the report of investigation team of the Scotland Yard for the assassination of the former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
The convention passed resolution asking for formation of an independent and high powered tribunal to try all those responsible for the subversion of the constitution on November 3, 2007 and thereafter collaborated acts of high treason.
The convention condemned the illegal and unconstitutional detention of deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, his family and other deposed judges. It also condemned the arrest of Aitzaz Ahsan, Justice (retd) Tariq Mehmood, Ali Ahmad Kurd and Munir Malik. It further said that the constitution has been purportedly mutilated through illegal amendments, which is subversion of the constitution in terms of Article 6 thereof and punishable under the law.
The resolution said that certain persons claiming to be judges of the Supreme Court and the High Courts have colluded and collaborated with a dictator for the subversion and abrogation of the constitution by taking oath under the PCO which inter-alia is in contempt of the order of the seven-member bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan passed on November 3, 2007.
The resolution also condemned the purported amendments made in the PEMRA Ordinance, Army Act and the Practitioners and Bar Council Act and declared any such attempt as illegal, unconstitutional and subversion of the constitution.
The Lawyers’ Convention resolution demanded immediate restoration of the judiciary of November 2, 2007 and the constitution. It also demanded for the immediate release of deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and his family members, other judges detained, Aitzaz Ahsan, Justice (retd) Tariq Mehmood and Ali Ahmad Kurd.-SANA
