Opposition stages walkout from Senate

ISLAMABAD: Combined opposition walked out of Senate Monday as a protest against PEMRA, Press and Publication Ordinance and confinement of Supreme Court Bar Association President Ch Aitzaz Ahsan along with other leading lawyers. With the delay of 45 minutes, Senate Session started here at 11:15 am. Acting Chairman of Senate Jan Mohammad Jamali presided over the session.

As the session started, journalists walk out of the press gallery to protest against the government’s curbs on media. Opposition leader Mian Raza Rabbani while supporting journalists said that state terrorism was flourishing in the country. He added that Ch Aitzaz Ahsan had been confined again and he had been tortured. He said that attitude of government with former generals was inappropriate.

Afterwards opposition leader declared walkout in protest. He was joined by PPP, MMA, PML (N), PONM and other opposition parties in the walk out. After the symbolic walkout, opposition members came back to the session. Caretaker federal ministers Dr Amjad and A J Khan negotiated with the journalists and assured them to look into the matter at highest level.-SANA
