ISLAMABAD: The Citizens Group on Electoral Process (CGEP) under the chairmanship of Justice (Retd.) Saeed uz Zaman Siddiqui, Former Chief Justice of Pakistan, will hold meetings with Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, President PML-Q and Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif, Quaid PML-N at Lahore on Wednesday.
The Citizens Group will also undertake two Fact Finding Missions to District Gujrat and District Sialkot in Punjab on February 7 and February 8 respectively. The Citizens Group has already undertaken Fact Finding Missions to Quetta, Karachi and District Attock. In the upcoming Fact Finding Missions of CGEP to Gujrat on February 7 and Sialkot on February 8, the Group will interact with the District Governments, various contesting candidates, the district returning officers, the Election Commission and the news media at both districts.
The Citizens Group on Electoral Process, a group of eminent Pakistanis facilitated by PILDAT to monitor the process leading up to General Election, has already held meetings with political parties including the PPP, JI, NP and PKMAP, etc. The Group intends to meet with the leadership of major political parties ahead of elections to gauge the perception of each party on the pre-electoral and election atmosphere in the country. The group also plans to undertake a Fact Finding Mission to Thatha and Badin on February 12, 2008.
The CGEP has been monitoring the electoral process since December 2006. The group consists of former judiciary, lawyers, senior media persons, academics, analysts and former civil and military bureaucracy.
The CGEP has been meeting on a monthly basis to review the electoral process and highlight its concerns through press statements, seminars, research papers and reports on electoral issues such as electoral rolls, code of conduct, presidential elections, electoral reforms, the NRO and the general election, score card on pre-poll fairness, voting behaviour and rigging history of 7 elections and fact finding mission to Attock, etc. All CGEP papers, publications, details of its activities and the list of members can be obtained at www.pildat.org/CGE-SANA
