12 killed, over 30 injured in RA Bazaar suicide blast

RAWALPINDI: At least 12 people were killed and 30 injured in a suicide attack on a military bus near R.A. Bazaar of Rawalpindi on Monday. The explosion occurred at 7.15 am outside the gate of National Logistics Cell in R.A. Bazaar, when a suicide bomber on a motorbike struck the bus carrying military personnel, police sources said.

Rescue workers and ambulances rushed to the site soon after the blast and security forces cordoned off the area. The injured were immediately rushed to CMH and DHQ hospital. The dead included six army personnel, they added. The blast also damaged another coaster carrying students of Army Medical College (AMC) and other vehicles. Several AMC students were also injured as a result of the blast.

The CMH sources said that 8 dead bodies and 26 injured were brought into the hospital. President Musharraf has called an emergency meeting of security forces officials following the blast. Security forces immediately cordoned off the area after the blast and started gathering forensic material from the site of the blast.

Security alert has been sounded the whole area falling under the jurisdiction of the RA police station and the area has been declared as sensitive zone where offices of 28 security organization are located. This was the second blast in the area, a previous blast in November had left 14 people dead and another 35 injured including several law enforcers.

Memon condemns Rawalpindi suicide attack

ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting Nisar A. Memom on Monday strongly condemned the Rawalpindi suicide attack that claimed lives of a number of people. The Minister while expressing his deep grief and shock over the incident said that certain elements wanted to derail the democratic process by trying to carry out subversive and terrorist activities in the country.

“To target innocent lives for nefarious designs show their frustration and defeat and they should know that they cannot survive with these inhuman tactics,” he added. Nisar Memon said that these handful elements would soon be annihilated with the collective efforts of the nation. He also prayed that Almighty Allah may rest the departed souls in eternal peace and grant courage to the bereaved families to bear this irreparable loss with fortitude.-SANA
