ISLAMABAD: Federal Food Committee in an important meeting chaired by Lt. Gen.(Retd) Farooq Ahmed Khan, Chairman NDMA on Wednesday, took a detailed overview of the flour situation in all the provinces, Northern Areas and AJK. Participants of the meeting included chief secretaries and food secretaries of all the provinces, AJK and Northern Areas, representatives of Railways, Food, Agriculture and Livestock, Petroleum and Natural Resources, Water and Power ministries and Planning & Development Division, representatives of provincial governments, NLC, Rangers, FC, DG Utility Stores Corporation and representatives of All Pakistan Flour Mills Associations.
The meeting focused on different aspects of the flour crisis and devised a plan to coordinate and share the responsibilities to avoid the recurrence of crisis. Chairman and all the participants showed satisfaction on flour situation all over the country. The chief secretaries presented overview of the flour situation in their respective provinces. In the meeting, need for improvement of food departments in all the provinces was emphasized. Participants agreed that each province should stock strategic reserves of wheat in their control.
It was also agreed that a mechanism for inter-provincial transportation of wheat be devised to check smuggling. NWFP and Sindh were asked to adopt the practice of daily issue of wheat to flour mills to keep the monitoring and administration easier. Lifting of wheat quota by flour mills must be ensured and those mills which violate the policy must be taken to the task. All the provinces were asked to take strict action against hoarders and smugglers. FFC is working on policy recommendations for federal government and the input from all quarters in this meeting will help in formulation of final policy guidelines. -SANA
