Economic policies to continue for best national interests: PM

ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed Mian Soomro has said that the economic policies of the government would continue uninterrupted since it is in the national interest to ensure a positive change in the life of the people. Talking to Admiral (Retd) Abdul Aziz Mirza, Advisor of Pak Gulf Construction Company at the Prime Minister’s Secretariat here on Friday, Soomro said that Islamabad is a growing city with ever-increasing demand for official and residential accommodation as well as hotels and shopping malls. He said the Centaurus project would provide much-needed relief to the city.

Pak Gulf Construction Company is investing Rs. 6 billion on the construction of multi-storey Centaurus project in Islamabad. The Prime Minister said that the government of Pakistan provides a level playing field to both local and foreign investors. Pakistan, he said, is the future hub of the economic activities of the region. The investors who join this endeavour are bound to bear the fruits and make profits in times to come, he added. He said that it would be incumbent upon the government to ensure that all the basic facilities are available to the investors and they get all possible assistance through one window facility.

The Prime Minister said that foreign investment of US$ 8.4 billion during 2006-07 though clearly reflects the confidence of the foreign investors in our economic policies. Since Pakistan has more potential of foreign investments due to its geo-strategic location and skilled worker force, more efforts needed to formulate strategies which would focus on sectors in which Pakistan is internationally and regionally more competitive, he observed.

He said that Pakistan has to facilitate and offer opportunities to the foreign investors to initiate joint ventures with the Pakistani businessmen within and outside of the country. Admiral Mirza, on the occasion, said that businessmen worldwide appreciate the investment policies of the government of Pakistan. He briefed the Prime Minister about the details of the project. He said the project which aims at providing quality hotel, residential and office accommodation as well as a shopping mall has obtained ISO certification for environment and would focus on energy conservation.-SANA
