MUZAFFARABAD: Kashmiris living on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) Saturday observed Right to Self Determination Day calling for implementation of the United Nations resolution passed on the January 5, 1949. Protest demonstrations and rallies are being held all over Azad Kashmir and Occupied Kashmir to invite the attention of the International community as well as the world body for holding plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir to resolve the lingering Kashmir dispute.Protestors demanded that the UN should take effective steps to ensure immediate implementation of its January 5, 1949, Resolutions for resolving peaceful and democratically 60- year long pending Kashmir issue.
They said that the UN Resolution of January 5, 1949, could alone resolve Kashmir issue in keeping with the wishes and aspirations of its people. Flaying the endless human rights abuses inflicted upon the people of Kashmir, the protestors said that siege and surging military operation, loot and arson and stealing of valuable ornaments and household goods by Indian troops across the state has in fact stumbling block in the way of resolving Kashmir dispute peacefully.
Meanwhile, the Kashmir American Council has drawn world attention to the continuing sufferings of the Kashmiri people even six decades after the United Nations pledged Kashmiris inalienable right to determine their future through plebiscite. In a statement, Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, head of the Washington-based Council, condemned India’s reneging on its promises made to the world’s highest diplomatic forum.-SANA
