Musharraf chairs meeting regarding law, order situation in Muharram advent

pm-pr-law.JPG RAWALPINDI: A high level meeting chaired by President Pervez Musharraf here on Friday carried out an intensive review of the law and order situation in the country in the context of the advent of Muharram-ul-Haraam and the forthcoming general elections to be held on February 18. The meeting was attended by the caretaker Prime Minister Mohammadmian Soomro, Interior Minister Hamid Nawaz, Provincial Chief Ministers, Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kiyani, security officials and other concerned functionaries.

The participants of the meeting were briefed about the deployment of Pakistan army and paramilitary forces on internal security duties in aid to civil administration in various parts of the country. They were also briefed about the plans for ensuring peace and security during Moharram-ul-Haraam and for the forthcoming general elections.

Addressing the meeting, the President emphasized the need for peace during this critical period and said that all possible efforts should be made for ensuring the protection of life and property of the citizens. He also underscored the need for timely assessment and evaluation of the damages caused to public and private property as a result of rioting that broke out following the assassination of Benazir |Bhutto. He said that necessary steps have to be taken so that it does not ever occur again. Caretaker Prime Minister Muhammadmian Soomro said that a mechanism for assessing the damage to public and private property was being put in place and the federal government is coordinating with the four provinces in this regard.-SANA
