WASHINGTON: The United States has said that the upcoming general election in Pakistan will be a “credible election” even though it will not be a “perfect” one.Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Richard Boucher said that Pakistan can have a good, credible, transparent and fair election but still it is not going to be a perfect election.
“One would not want to have such disruption with the media and the political parties…this close to any election. That obviously changes the atmosphere of it. But I think if we keep working at it and they keep working at it, they can have an election that really does reflect the choices made by the people of Pakistan,” Boucher told a Sub Committee of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
He expressed confidence that Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf will lift emergency rule on December 16 ahead of the elections. He said the US has a very comprehensive programme that has been going on for some time to try to make this election as credible and as transparent as possible.-SANA
