Musharraf directs Interior Ministry to gear up forces to tackle militancy

RAWALPINDI: President General Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday directed the Interior Ministry to gear up the security forces for effectively tackling the issue of militancy and terrorism in the country. He was presiding a high-level meeting held to review the over all security situation following imposition of emergency in the country and expressed satisfaction over the measures taken in stabilization the situation.

The meeting was also attended by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz. Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao gave an overview about the prevailing situation and the measures taken by law enforcement agencies to address the security situation.

The President directed the Interior Minister that all resources and assistance should be provided to the law enforcement agencies so that they could have no hindrance and reach out the mastermind behind the militants, terrorists and extremists.

The President said there was a need to gear up the law enforcement agencies so that they could cope with the militancy and extremism and counter threats of terrorism as well. Information Minister Muhammad Ali Durrani informed the meeting situation about role of media in the country.

He said five media persons were arrested in Sindh and one from Punjab. The President directed that journalists arrested should be released immediately. The Vice Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani informed the meeting about the deployment of military troops in the federally administered tribal areas and along the Pak-Afghan border for maintaining security.-SANA
