WASHINGTON: United States on Monday asked President General Pervez Musharraf to quit as Chief of the Army Staff, restore democracy and hold elections under the country’s Constitution.
Addressing a news conference at the West Bank, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that the restoration of the constitution and holding of the elections are in the interest of Pakistan. “We believe that the best path for Pakistan is to quickly return to a constitutional path and then to hold elections,” she stated.
She said that President Musharraf himself has said that he will take off his uniform, which would be an important step. He said that Pakistan has gone away from democracy on which the US is much disappointed.
