ISLAMABAD: President General Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz have emphasized upon need for the holding of free and fair elections in a peaceful atmosphere.Both the leaders discussed the current political and security situation in the country in a meeting at Awain-e-Sadr. The leaders expressed confidence that the Code of Conduct circulated by the Election Commission as well as the security Code issued by the Ministry of Interior would pave the way for successful completion of the election process.
The meeting also discussed various aspects of the current emergency rule and emphasized upon the need for closer cooperation and collaboration between the Executive, Legislature and the Judiciary in the larger national interest. They also discussed measures taken in Swat and FATA to address the situation and to curb extremism.
Elections not to be delayed: Elahi
LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervez Elahi has said that term of Assemblies would neither be extended nor elections would be delayed. Addressing a press conference, he said some elements are creating rumors to avoid elections as they can not face PML (Q) in the elections. They would not succeed in their designs, he added.
He said PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto wants to get the elections delayed but we would bring her to the court of people. Chaudhary Pervez Elahi said there would be no seat adjustment with PPP, however, he said he is encouraging PML (N) workers and leaders to join PML (Q) in the elections as the PML (N) leadership can not return to Pakistan within next three years.
The Chief Minister said that General Pervez Musharraf has imposed emergency to protect the interests of the country and not for his personal gains. To a question, he said media would be taken along as the government believes in independence of media. He said that a code of conduct was being prepared for media. To another question, he said that judges are taking oath while thousands of lawyers are supporting us.-SANA
