ISLAMABAD: Senator Prof. Khurshid Ahmad, Naib Amir Jamaat-e-Islami has condemned in strongest terms the imposition of emergency by General Pervez Musharraf in Pakistan and has called it a martial law. He said that he is confident that all political and religious parties would fight this invasion on democracy and Constitution.
In a statement issued, he termed the move as “the most despicable attack on democracy” and said that General Pervez Musharraf knew that his candidature for Presidentship is “unconstitutional, illegal and immoral and the Supreme Court was about to declare his disqualification.” The imposition of emergency is an effort to frustrate the process of constitutional justice in the country, he added.
Prof. Khurshid Ahmad said that suspension of the constitution, dismissal of the Chief Justice and other judges of the supreme and high courts, arrest of political leaders and lawyers, gagging of the media and attack on TV are acts of high treason and all those responsible for this constitutional vandalism as well as all persons cooperating with the General Musharraf must be impeached and punished under the constitution.
He said that the nation rejects this open attack on democracy and “irtual murder of the constitution.” This action of General Pervez shows how desperate he is, and is a clear indication that he has lost his political battle, he added. Prof Khurshaid Ahmad was of the opinion that these unconstitutional acts can not give Musharraf any new lease. Rather, he has committed a political suicide, he observed.
JI Naib Amir hoped that the world community which pay lip service to democracy day in and day out will now come out openly in the condemnation of this effort to destroy democracy in Pakistan. “The international community would side with the people of Pakistan in their struggle to save the country from armed usurpers and achieve complete restoration of constitution and democracy in Pakistan,” he concluded.
