Federal govt can’t impose emergency due to its own failure, says Gillani

ISLAMABAD: Prominent lawyer, intellectual and former law minister Syed Iftikhar Hussain Gillani has said that the federal government cannot impose emergency due to its failure in the areas run under its administration. Addressing the lawyers community at his residence Gillani said that the protection of democracy is a professional responsibility of lawyers added that there was no constitutional reason for the imposition of emergency in the country.

He said that according to article 233 of the constitution when the provincial government faces a complete failure then a reason could be made for the imposition of emergency in the country. The lawyers’ community due to its revolutionary leadership and knowledge could play an effective role in the society.

Lauding the efforts of deposed Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, he said that the former CJ has increased the prestigious of judiciary by dispensing justice without fear and favour.-SANA
