Qazi blame Musharraf for reining power by force

ISLAMABAD: President Mutahida Majlis-e-Amal and Amir Qazi Hussain Ahmed has accused President General Musharraf of reining the power by force, saying that Musharraf “promulgated the constitution through sheer force which is absolutely illegitimate.” In an interview with a private TV channel, Qazi said he was regretting for being deceived by President Musharraf. Opposition, he said, would continue its struggle to bring stability and rule of law in the country through courts and judiciary.

He said that the government was violating the true spirit of constitution and law by detaining the opposition leaders and party workers. “The authorities are arresting members of the electoral college which is contrary to the law and constitution,” he stated. Qazi said that he was so upset over the present deteriorating situation and political instability in the country. He held Musharraf responsible for instability and deteriorating law and order situation prevailing throughout the country. He said “Musharraf’s strategy revolves around his personal interests.”

Amir Jamat-e-Islami said that he sat with Musharraf on the negotiation table in the hope that he would leave the post of Army Chief but unfortunately he backtracked from the promise to retire from the military office. “Musharraf betrayed the opposition on uniform and Musharraf’s whole negotiating team is responsible for deceiving the nation,” Qazi said. He said that there is a martial law in the country as government is bending-over to curb the basic human rights. The government, he said, has arrested 200 political leaders and workers because they wanted to go to the Supreme Court. Qazi pledged to hold high level meetings of All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM), Mutahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) and Jamat-e-Islami in Islamabad despite the authorities’ crackdown on the political leadership and workers in the capital.

He said that the government has crossed all limits of liberty and freedom movement by carrying out raids on the residences of the politicians. “Presently martial law is prevailing in the country and the land is void of law and constitution,” he stated. Shedding light on the role of MMA, Qazi said that the alliance is a binding force of all the religious parties. Without MMA, the religious parties would shattered and therefore the religious leaders must value the importance of the Mutahida Majli-e-Amal, he asserted. “MMA is a blessing for the country and let us unite and strengthen the alliance,” he added. MMA, he said, was playing a pivotal role in eliminating the curse of sectarianism and was creating a sense of coherence in the socio-political and religious issues.

When asked that what would be his reaction, if the Supreme Court rules in favour of President Musharraf and was declared legible for contesting the elections, Qazi said, “He would consider it wrong.” Musharraf himself has said that no one is legible to be Prime Minister for the third term so how could he be President for the third time, he said. “Musharraf has twice taken the Presidential oath and he could not do it for the third time according to the law,” he added.

Qazi said that the politician would make a way-out, if the military ended its role in the country politics. Constitution says that there should be an interim government of political consensus with Chairman Senate as its President who would hold free, fair and transparent elections. Replying to a question, he said that if Nawaz Sharif, Benazir Bhutto and Imran Khan could become the Prime Minister so why not Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman. “Fazal is a veteran politician, very committed and able on every count to be elected as Prime Minister,” he added.-SANA
